From from 1992 to 1995 a brutal war raged in the small Balkan nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is estimated that at least 100,000 people were killed and more than 2,000,000 displaced.
Today Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided between three ethnic groups: Bosnians, Serbs and Croats.
Despite the apparent peace beneath the surface, a profound conflict still rages - one which will determine the future soul of this country. The seeds of radical Islam planted during the war has today yielded competing visions of Islam uncharacteristic of traditional Bosnian Islam. According to a 2017 Council of Europe report, over the last twenty years 245 different Arab humanitarian organisations have been operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina of which a number are financing the promotion of conservative Islam. The result for Christians: around 10,000 people leave the country each year, among them many Catholics, discriminated against in the workplace, schools and social life - who see little hope in the future.
